Western Golf Alliance expands to include two new states
Arizona, Nevada added, regional organizational model adopted

LAS VEGAS.  After receiving several proposals from various golf groups, the Western Golf Alliance announced today the expansion of the WGA into Arizona and Nevada. This expansion now means the WGA covers five western states instead of just the three coastal states of Washington, Oregon and California.

"It became clear that there was a great deal of interest by all parties in making this change happen," said Brian Gray, WGA president, speaking from The Mirage Resort and Casino where the WGA Board of Directors is holding its annual winter meeting. "Golfers in Nevada and Arizona wanted the opportunity to join the WGA, and our members wanted the chance to include the great golf courses in Scottsdale, Tucson, Las Vegas, and Reno in future tournaments. Truth be told, this was a no brainer."

With this expansion, the WGA also altered its charter to subdivide some of the larger and more populous states into regions. Each region will have a Regional Governor responsible for managing local business and golf events. The WGA now recognizes nine geographic regions, which are:

A - Southern California
B - California Superior
C - Greater Portland
D - Other Oregon
E - Western Washington
F - Eastern Washington
G - Sierra-Nevada
H - Greater Las Vegas
I - Arizona Unlimited

"Certainly, there are many, many golfers who are pleased this has finally happened," said Peter Weidenfeld, the new regional governor of the Greater Las Vegas region. "It's great to belong to a golf organization that listens and responds to both its existing members, and to petitions that are good for the great sport of golf."
