Oddsmaker community takes note of upcoming event
BOTHELL, Washington. Today, the Boar's Head and Thistle Pub, Sportsbook and Cricket Club of London posted their official odds for the 2004 Western Golf Alliance Open, installing Robert Gibson as the pre-tournament favorite. This announcement represented the first of what will likely be several sports books to establish wagering lines for this upcoming event.
"After examining the members and courses in play, we are comfortable being the first book to hit the pitch with our odds," said Nigel Smythe, manager of the Boar's Head and Thistle. "Though honestly, we don't usually give much mind to American golfers," added Smythe. "They play golf in the nice sunshine, on pristine courses, with ocean vistas and such. Bah! Let's see the Yanks play in a cow pasture during a nice North Sea squall, the way the game was meant to be played!"
"Certainly I'm honored to be the early favorite," commented Gibson, "though, at this time, I wasn't actually planning on playing in the Open this year. Oh well."
The full odds are as follows:
Robert Gibson, 3-1
Brian Gray, 7-2
Brent Sumrall, 5-1
Peter McGarry, 6-1
Matt Wakefield, 8-1
Doug Atchison, 10-1
Mark Taylor, 14-1
Trever Esko, 18-1
Pat Frengle, 50-1
Big Al Torrico, 75-1
