Try, try again for Torrey Pines
SoCal coastal destination selected - again - for 2022 WGA Open
BOTHELL, Washington. Today, the Western Golf Alliance announced that its 2022 Western Golf Alliance Open will be played in the San Diego area. This is the second time this destination has been selected to host the Open, however the first occurance - for the 2020 Open - was relocated due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions imposed in California.
"We are delighted to try again to bring our championship to this great coastal destination, which includes the greatest true-muni golf course in the US," said Peter McGarry, WGA president. "We remain committed to public access west coast golf. Therefore, similar to what other major championships did, we chose to simply 'bump' our plans."
"In 2020, we had our Open ready to go at Torrey Pines right up until 60 days prior to the event. But when California returned to lockdown status we had to scramble for a backup plan," explained Doug Atchison, WGA competition committee chairman. "The San Diego coast is the archetype for the SoCal golf experience, and we are very happy to be able to finally partake of this location for our WGA Open."
The Western Golf Alliance is known for holding its Open on elite, famous courses that represent the very best golf in the western United States. While the WGA does not make a final determination on which courses will be used for the Open at the same time it announces the destination, the competition committee says the initial plan is to focus on both of the Torrey Pines golf courses and the Torrey Pines Lodge, then fill in additional rounds based on the best local options.
"It was a bitter pill to swallow when we had to move the Open from here in 2020, and we are glad to give this another go," said McGarry. "We anticipate a truly great golf event."
The WGA expects the announcement of San Diego to spur interest in membership, and is prepared for such inquiries. All probationary members that join between now and May 2022 are eligible to quality for the Western Golf Alliance Open.
